Neath 0 Caersws 0
Saturday 24th January 2009 at The Gnoll, Neath
A draw was a fair result in this dour relegation battle at the Gnoll with both sides low on confidence this proved to be a tense encounter with neither side able to create any clear cut chances.
Having defeated high flying Bangor City away the previous Saturday the Eagles would have been disappointed with the draw but Caersws with central defenders Matthew Holt and James Taylor making their debuts thoroughly deserved a share of the spoils.
Neath had the better of the early exchanges with Caersws keeper Jon Rowley bravely saving at the feet of the onrushing striker Richard French in the game's second minute.
On the quarter hour mark Neath's Dale Evans saw a flighted free kick from the wide left comfortably dealt with by Rowley despite the low winter sun hampering his view. Caersws worked their way back into the game slowly and on 18 minutes the influential Graham Jones crossed superbly from the right but once again their was no one on hand to apply the finishing touch.
Just a minute later James Taylor sent a 20 yard effort narrowly wide with home keeper Wyn Walters stranded. On 21 minutes Neath hit back and it was Richard French who headed wide and minutes later Dale Evans missed a glorious opportunity when the ball was cut back to him but instead blazed the ball high over the bar when he really should have given the home side the lead.
After 35 minutes Dave Hughes shot over from just inside the box for the villagers and five minutes before the break a jack Jenkins free kick was headed over by Sean Cronin.
HALF TIME 0 0
The second half saw both sides remain nervy and cautious with Caersws restricting Neath to aimless long range shooting which rarely troubled Rowley in the Caersws goal with only Stephen Pockett’s 30 yard drive the only attempt reasonably close to being on target in the opening 20 minutes of the second period.
With the introduction of Christian Courtney Caersws were able to offer more options in attack and started to take the game to the hosts and on 71 minutes substitute flashed a perfect effort across the face of goal inches from the back post but annoyingly no one was on hand to help themselves to a certain goal.
Seven minutes before the final whistle an excellent in swinging corner from Mark Davies was headed narrowly over by Ross Jefferies who was disappointed not to have at least hit the target. But a minute later Neath had their only real attempt on target saving superbly from sub Dion Chambers after a mazy run from fellow sub and Swansea loanee Kerry Morgan.
Quick to respond Caersws could well have snatched all three points late on when Graham Jones excellent 25 yard strike was fantastically saved by Walters and the hard working Chris Melia just failed to get enough contact on the rebound to get it past the Neath Stopper.
This was an excellent point for the bluebirds who climb one place as a result and nearer to safety.
