Porthmadog 0 Caersws 1
Saturday 31st January 2009 at The Traeth, Porthmadog
Another clean sheer and three priceless points saw the Bluebirds climb up to 12th place at a wind swept Traeth. Although this was not the prettiest of games it was another excellent team performance by the visitors.
This was emphasised by another sterling defensive display from new-boys Matthew Holt and James Taylor who kept the normally prolific Marc Lloyd-Williams subdued and ineffective for virtually the duration of the game.
The well travelled veteran did have his one and only excellent chance after just 4 minutes when he headed wide from 10 yards when given time and space. A minute later James Taylor send another headed wide of the mark when the improving Jamie Haynes sent a free kick the eventually made its way to the back post.
With the wind at their backs Porth exerted pressure on the villagers, but were confined to long range efforts which rarely troubled Bluebirds keeper Jon Rowley. On 33 Jonathan Jones saw a 25 yard effort go narrowly wide and 3 minutes later Chris Melia saw a shot held by home keeper Dave Vickers following a cross from the right.
After 39 minutes a speculative shot from Porth’s Chris Jones landed on the roof of the net and then four minutes before the interval Melia shot over for the villagers after he had superbly worked space for himself and left three Porthmadog defenders in his wake.
And just before the half time whistle went Caersws almost took the lead when Dave Hughes had an opportunity but unfortunately he narrowly failed to hit the target.
HALF TIME 0 0
With the wind now at their backs Caersws started the second half strongly with the home side penned in their own half for long periods. Two minute into the half saw an excellent block and tackle by the home side to deny Caersws Dave Hughes.
The crucial goal came in the 51st minute when Jamie Haynes drilled a low free kick through a crowded box from 25 yards past the despairing Vickers in goal. Caersws to their credit continued to pound the home defence with Melia heading wide subs Christian Courtney and Aeron Edwards sending efforts wide and narrowly over respectively.
Porthmadog did have a good opportunity late on when Lloyd-Williams saw his goal bound free kick from wide right headed over by a colleague. Jon Rowley was then forced into his only real save of the game when he brilliantly pushed over Gareth Parry’s effort in the 90th minute.
With referee Brian James somehow finding seven minutes of added time the Caersws faithful had to endure a few tense moments but it was Chris Melia who went closest to adding to the score line when his goal bound effort was cleared of the line by Ryan Davies with Dave Vickers no where to be seen.
Credit must be given once again to all the bluebirds’ players who worked tirelessly throughout and for one another to record an overdue away win in the league.
