Caersws 0 Llanelli 2
Recreation ground, Tuesday 17th February 2009
Two goals within the space of as many minutes sentenced Caersws to another home defeat despite matching last season's champions for periods of the game as the bluebirds failed to find the net once again.
In the first minute Chris Melia hit the post with Llanelli's goalie just getting the faintest of touches to deflect it onto the woodwork. Two minutes later - in what was a bright start by the home side - a right wing cross by Dave Hughes saw Jamie Haynes' blaze a shot over the bar.
The warning signs were there as Llanelli bounced back a minute later with a purposeful attack that led to the ball hitting the back of the net but being ruled out for offside as Mark Pritchard slotted home after good work by Stephen Evans.
The reds continued to look the most dangerous with their man of the match Pritchard bringing out the best in Caersws glove man Jon Rowley with a low save on just 7 minutes.
After a quarter of an hour Stephen Evans shot wide from 25 yards and this was followed two minutes later when Pritchard fired wide from 15 yards.
Caersws though continued to battle hard and full back Jon Jones shot over from 30 yards in the 23rd minutes and they continued to create with the hard working Aeron Edwards seeing his shot deflected for a fruitless corner.
Two minutes from the interval Jamie Haynes saw his corner well held under pressure by Morris in the visitors goal and the villagers went in at the break having played well and coped well with Andy Legg's long throws and in swinging corners.
Following Peter Nicolas' half time team talk the Reds came out much more positively in the second half and in the 52nd minute they opened the scoring when following Jason Bowen's right wing cross which was superbly pushed away by Rowley only to see the ball fall to debutant Rory Smitham who fired in from 12 yards.
Worse was to come for the bluebirds in the next attack when Andy Legg's right wing corner was met at the near post by the oncoming Mark Pritchard who had the freedom to glance an unopposed header past Rowley to put the game beyond the home side.
In the 67th minute Llanelli's captain Antonio Corbisiero saw a 30 yard effort held by Rowley as Caersws continued to battle and get a lifeline back into the game. Mark Davies hooked one such chance narrowly over from 18 yards following good work down the right.
Five minutes from the end Llanelli's towering centre back Wyn Thomas saw his 20 yard shot deflected for a corner in what was the last action of the game. This was a better performance from the bluebirds but there was still no end product in sight. One positive was the introduction of local lads Scott Williams and Dan Dawson for the closing stages.
