Caersws 0 Carmarthen 2
Recreation Ground, Caersws - Saturday 21st February 2009
Caersws crashed to their fourth consecutive defeat against Deryn Brace's European hopefuls, but once again more worryingly for the home side was their inability to score - a run now stretching three games.
After 8 minutes Paul Fowler saw his 18 yard effort pushed over by home keeper Jon Rowley, but two minutes later the old gold took the lead when Neil Smothers drilled home a low effort from 18yards beyond the strecthed Rowley.
Carmarthen continued to look the better side with Craig Hughes having a goal ruled out for offside after defender Mark Dodds had hit the woodwork. Caersws though could have equalised in the 16th minute when the vistitors goalie Neil Thomas denied Chris Melia following superb interplay between Aeron Edwards and Dave Hughes. The keeper somehow spreading himself and a small slice of luck saw the ball roll out for a corner.
On 23 minutes jamie haynes saw his 18 yard effort pushed around for a corner with Thomas again at full stretch and three minutes later the dangerous and in-form Craig Hughes whot wide for the visitors.
Caersws did come back into the game with Graham Jones having a shot held and David Hughes shooting wide after 38 minutes. Sadly the killer goal arrived just three minutes before the half time whistle when Stuart Roberts released Craig Hughes who calmly rounded Rowley before finding he net from an acute angle.
In the second half Caersws never looked like breaking down their visitors and rode their luck, none more so than in the opening minute of the second period when scorer Hughes sent an overhead kick narrowly over.
On 49 minutes the hardworking Sasha Walters crossed to Hughes who saw his effort held by Rowley. With Caersws ineffective as an offensive force they eventually introduced Steve Hughes to ruffle the Carmarthen back line. He immediately won some headers and brought others into the game.
On 75 minutes fellow bluebird sub Christian Courtney shot wide from 20 yards and the remaining 15 minutes belonged to the home side with Mark Davies seeing a fierce drive blocked and them camped in the opposition half.
Sadly this was another loss with little or no support up front for the hard working Chris Melia see the threat of relegarion loom large so it is imperitive the home side looks at Plan B as Plan A obviously is not working..
