BERRIEW 2 CAERSWS 3

Saturday 25th July 2009

Friendly, Recreation Ground, Berriew.

Caersws produced a somewhat lacklustre display against fellow Mid-Walians Berriew, the few changes and new faces seemed to disrupt the progress of the first match, however once again there were some positives to take from the game but there certainly is still plenty to do yet.

Once again some trialists were on show, some having a second outing whereas there were also some new ones as well. Graham Jones was a notable absentee for the bluebirds who had a decent following at Berriew.

The home side stunned the visitors after just 11 minutes when a high bluebird defensive line was breached by an excellent through ball which Berriews Will Thomas pounced on and calmly slotted past the helpless Dave Jones.

Caersws once again had to come back from a goal down, and the goal came from a great ball in from Kevin Davies which was helped in by a glancing header from Gareth Mansell on 27 minutes. Again the goal settled the visitors who once again had A.Trialist on the left wing having some joy with some mazy runs and almost snatching a goal himself with a low strike on the hour mark which was pushed round the near post.

A minute later another A.Trialist, playing alongside Melia had a well struck free kick tipped wide by a great saving hand of the Berriew number one. The Bluebirds grabbed the lead when the hardworking Chris Melia dispossessed a Berriew defender in the box to sneak in a steer the ball past the keeper.

The second half was fairly uneventful, the pace of Thomas and decent build ups always posed a threat for the home side, but Caersws had the better chances, a Kevin Davies free kick was headed against the bar by A.Trialist early in the second half.

He eventually got his deserved goal and capped a fine performance alongside Melia when substitute Dave Hughes waltzed past a handful of Berriew defenders and cut the ball back for him to get Caersws third from 2 yards on 77 minutes.

The copybook was blotted when Berriew scored a second on 82 minutes with a near post header which Dave Jones failed to grasp. Overall this was a slightly disappointing performance overall, although there were certainly some positives. Kevin Davies and the strike partnership were particular highlights along with the trialist on the left wing and the improving Gareth Mansell and Scott Williams.
