Caersws 0 Aberystwyth 4
August 15th 2009
Aberystwyth eventually won this game comfortably but Caersws were well in this match up to half time and the final score line may have flattered the seasiders.
After 2 minutes Matt Prosser had a shot blocked following a Chris Melia cross from the right and on 8 minutes Dave Jones in the home goal comfortably held Luke Bowens header.
Play continued to be evenly balanced and after 15 minutes Steve Cann in the Aberystwyth goal eventually held the ball at the second attempt under pressure from a home forward. After 26 minutes Sion James sent a header wide following Geoff Kellaways left wing free kick in Aberystwyths only serious attempt at goal.
On 26 minutes keeper Cann kept Aberystwyth in the game with a superlative save from Prossers 8 yard effort somehow pushing the ball over the cross bar for a corner.
4 minutes before the break a Kellaway corner was headed over by Luke Bowen.
In first half injury time Aberystwyth were awarded a free kick 22 yards out. A well executed set piece involving 3 players allowed Mike Waters to drive the ball towards goal which took a wicked deflection before entering the net giving Jones no chance whatsoever.
The game was to change completely in the second half when head injuries to central defenders Hugh Clarke and James Taylor eventually necessitated Clarke being substituted. During the period when Clarke was receiving treatment, Aberystwyth scored 2 goals which would have disappointed manager Mike Evans. On 53 minutes Sion James was left totally unmarked to head in a right wing corner. The game was sealed 3 minutes later when Caersws lost the ball in midfield allowing Graham Evans to feed Waters who advanced towards goal before placing the ball comfortably beyond Jones. With Graham Jones having had to move back into the back four, Aberystwyth went on to dominate the second period. After 68 minutes Steve Bowen sent an effort wide from 12 yards and on 78 minutes Geraint Lewis making a welcome return to the Bluebirds shot over from distance. Two minutes later Kellaway was left unmarked at the back post to drill the ball into the net beyond Jones. On 85 minutes, Jones produced a superb save from Luke Sherbon with Kevin Davies completing the clearance at the expense of a corner.
Aberystwyth subsitute Robert Evans should have scored in the penultimate minute but put his effort wide when well placed.
Although losing the game, Caersws can take many positives from their performance with Graham Jones having a superb game and when fully fit the experienced Lee Jenkins will be an excellent signing.
Unfortunately basic defending errors cost the Bluebirds dearly.
