Caersws 1 Port Talbot Town 2
Saturday 7th November 2009, The Recreation Ground.
Caersws were unlucky not to get anything out of this game but lack of concentration cost the Villagers dearly as they lost by the odd goal to Port Talbot.
Port Talbot took the lead in the first minute when a short corner by ex-bluebird Lloyd Grist to the feet of free scoring Liam McCreesh caught the home side napping, allowing McCreesh the opportunity to lash the ball beyond the outstretched glove of Dave Jones in the home goal.
Caersws, despite the early set back were soon level when in the fourth minute Chris Melia found Matt Prosser who lobbed Lee Kendall from 15 yards.
The ball hit the back of the net again in the 14th minute when a left wing cross by Lee John was met at the back post by Drew Fahiya to score despite an element of offside in the conversion. Two minutes later Scott Williams had a 12 yard effort deflected for a corner.
On 23 minutes Leigh De Vulgt sent a 20 yard shot over for the steelmen and ten minutes later Martin Rose saw a header held by Jones. More Port Talbot pressure came on 39 minutes when an unmarked Lee John saw his effort stopped by Jones when he should have done better.
Two minutes before the interval, the energetic Scott Williams saw another effort go wide from the edge of the area.
Port Talbot had the better of the second half but there were still notable efforts for the home side with Mark Griffiths and Chris Melia going close on 49 and 50 minutes respectively.
The visitors were awarded a penalty on 53 minutes when Hugh Clarke was deemed to have brought down Rose, however the Town marksmans resulting spot kick was superbly saved by Dave Jones to deny the South Walians.
After 58 minutes Clarke found Prosser but his header flew harmless over the bar. At the other end Port Talbot had a wonderful opportunity to extend their lead in the 67 minute when Fahiya shot wide at the back post with the goal at his mercy.
After 74 minutes Prosser sent another header off target, this time seeing it glance wide of the post, and Caersws continued to look dangerous in breakaways and the hardworking Geraint Lewis saw a low effort held by Kendall after 80 minutes.
Five minutes from time Dave Jones had to be at his best to deny Port Talbot substitute Lee Barrow to ensure the score stayed respectable.
Although Port Talbot had the better chances, this was a much better performance by the Bluebirds who could quite easily snatched a point.
